Luxor Temple

luxor temple

Large temple located in the heart of Luxor on the east bank of the Nile River which dates back to the Eighteenth Dynasty (c.1550 - 1295 BC), it is located towards and near Karnak Temple as it wasn’t like most of other ancient Egyptian temples, it is not laid out on an east-west axis. it was the main venue for one the most important religious celebrations of ancient Egyptians, as the cult images of Amun, his wife Mut, their son, the lunar god Khonsu, were transported in grand procession from Karnak to Luxor Temple so they could visit (Amenemopet) the god that resides there, it was called the Opet Festival.

Luxor Temple was built by different rulers, the oldest structure existing, a shrine which goes back to the reign of Hatshepsut (c.1473 –1458 BC). Amenhotep III built the core of the temple (c.1390 –1352 BC), also he built the Great Colonnade that consists of 2 rows of seven colossal columns. The temple’s core is has a columned hall fronted by a courtyard with columns around its perimeter. The Temple was decorated with the scenes depicting the Opet Festival which were completed by Tutankhamun (c.1336 – 1327 BC) and Horemheb (c.1323 – 1295 BC).
