Mortuary Temple Of Hatshepsut

Mortuary Temple Of Hatshepsut

Hatshepsut is the queen who became pharaoh, she built a fascinating temple located in Deir al-Bahari on the west back of Luxor directly across the Nile from Karnak Temple, Hatshepsut’s temple was designed by the chief steward of Amun, Senenmut.

The temple has 3 levels each level has a colonnade at its end. there is an open courtyard lies beyond the portico on the last level.

Djeser-djeseru is Hatshepsut’s mortuary temple, that’s where her cult was practiced after her death, also there are sections for the cults of her father Thutmose I, the goddess Hathor, and Anubis. there is an opened altar directed to the sky and the sun and was designated to the cult of the solar Ra-Horakhty.

There is a passage cut directly to the living rock culminates in Amun sanctuary on the temple’s central axis at the far end of the upper courtyard, also the temple’s walls are covered with beautiful painted reliefs representing temple rituals, religious festivals, and the transportation of obelisks from the quarry to Karnak Temple, also the reliefs in the portico on the Middle Platform are the most interesting, furthermore the decorative programme on the left side represents Hatshepsut’s expedition to Punt.
